In their first year the Friends of Upton Pyne have raised more than £10,000, an on the way have renewed the feel and spirit of village community that too often gets lost in the pressures and rush of our lives. This money has been raised through the generosity and support people in the village, the parish and even the wider community. This boost to the funds of the parochial council has allowed them to commit to and commence many of The Church of Our Lady’s much needed restoration projects.
Works that have been completed include repairs to gutters and drainpipes, refurbishment of the West Door, Chancel Door and the Lych Gate. Initial repairs the the stained glass windows and window jambs have started.
An incredible start – it is unlikely that any of this work would have been started without the funds raised by the Friends of Upton Pyne
The challenges for 2014 include repointing the exterior walls of the church and replacing the bell ropes. Total cost around £7,600. It is hoped also to undertake restoration work on the war memorial, for which a grant is being sought. The windo sponsorship scheme will continue in tandem with our fundraising for general maintenance projects.
The chruch grounds have looked magnificent all year, this is thanks to The Gardening Team- a team of locals who contribute generously of their time and expertise to ensure that the grass is cut, the hedges trimmed and everything is kept looking good. On top of routine maintenance they have also undertaken works that have been neglected for too long and uncovered areas of the church grounds and footpath that had become overgrown and almost inaccessible over years of neglect. it is worth adding that as a result of the hard work of the Gardening Team in 2013 the Parochial Coucil has been able to save ove £1000, money that can now be used for vital maintenance projects.
A big target for 2014, we can do it! There is already a fantastic programme of events lined up for 2014. The hot supper club continues with a great line up of speakers and menus. In the summer we already have two major events planned: Jane Austen day (22nd June) and the World War 1 Weekend (2nd – 4th August). Other event will be announced just as soon as we have dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s.
There are many opportunities for you to be part of this. We always need more help, whether it is good ideas or help with the various events all are welcome.
